Plasma electrodes are made of solid silver, allowing you to cut faster and electrodes last longer. Silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of all metals (about 5.5% better electrical and 6% better thermal conductivity than copper), so more current goes into the arc and not just into heating the cooling water. Since silver is more thermally conductive, the heat generated is transferred more quickly to the cooling water and the electrode operates cooler. Another reason for the significant increase in durability is the fact that silver does not like arc radiation. So the hafnium liner erodes each time it is ignited, and so it can erode much further in a silver electrode than in a copper-bodied electrode, sometimes up to three times as deep before the arc attempts to radiate out of the electrode body, which is the end of the electrode's lifetime.
