Fluxes – an essential part of quality welding

Fluxes play a key role in many welding and surfacing processes. They are special powdered or granulated materials that protect the molten metal from air, impurities, and moisture during welding. At the same time, they influence the stability of the welding arc and the final properties of the weld. Properly selected flux can significantly improve the quality, strength, and appearance of the joint.

The function of fluxes in welding

The main role of flux is to create a protective atmosphere and prevent undesirable reactions between the molten metal and oxygen or nitrogen from the air. During welding, the flux melts and forms a so-called slag coating, which insulates the weld pool and can be easily removed after solidification. This process reduces the risk of porosity and improves the metallurgical properties of the weld.

In addition to protection, fluxes also contribute to arc stability, facilitate its ignition, and enable uniform melting of the wire or electrode. Some types contain alloying elements that enrich the weld with additives and improve its resistance to wear, corrosion, or high temperatures.

Types of fluxes

Fluxes are classified according to their application:

  • Fluxes for Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) – used for welding thick-walled structures and large steel parts.
  • Active fluxes – influence the chemical composition of the weld by adding alloying elements.
  • Inactive fluxes – their main role is protection without altering the chemical composition of the metal.

✅ Advantages of fluxes:

  • Increase the quality and strength of the weld.
  • Improve penetration and arc stability.
  • Reduce the risk of pores, cracks, and other defects.
  • Enable welding of very thick materials.

❌ Disadvantages of fluxes:

  • Require proper selection according to the specific material and technology.
  • Poorly chosen flux can worsen the properties of the weld.
  • After welding, the slag coating must be removed.

Applications of fluxes

Fluxes are used in heavy engineering, energy, shipbuilding, pipeline and steel structure production, as well as in repair work. Wherever a high-quality, deep, and strong weld is required, fluxes are indispensable.
