Solders – essential material for quality soldering
Solders are special metal alloys designed for soldering, which is the process of joining two metal parts using a molten filler material with a lower melting point than the base material itself. Unlike welding, soldering does not melt the base metal – the joint is created solely by the molten solder, which fills the gap between the joined parts through capillary action.
Solders are used in many fields – from fine electronics and electrical engineering, through plumbing, to industrial production and repair. The right solder ensures a strong, watertight, or electrically conductive joint depending on the application requirements.
Types of solders
Solders are classified according to their chemical composition and melting temperature:
- Soft solders – usually based on tin (Sn) with additions of lead, silver, copper, or bismuth. They melt at lower temperatures (typically up to 450 °C). Ideal for soldering electronics, delicate joints, copper pipes, or thin sheets.
- Hard solders (brazing alloys) – made from copper, silver, nickel, or brass alloys. They have higher melting points (above 450 °C) and create stronger joints. Used for joining steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and other metals in industry and engineering.
✅ Advantages:
- Allow joining different types of metals without melting them.
- Provide strong, often watertight or electrically conductive joints.
- Soft solders are suitable for sensitive electronics, while hard solders are used for highly stressed joints.
- Simple and fast soldering process with low material consumption.
❌ Disadvantages:
- The joint may not achieve the same strength as welding.
- The use of flux is required to clean the surface and improve wetting.
- An improper choice of solder can lead to insufficient resistance to heat or corrosion.
Applications of solders
Solders are widely used in everyday practice and industrial production. Soft solders are commonly applied in electronics repair and manufacturing, assembly of electrical joints, soldering of copper pipes in plumbing or heating systems. Hard solders are used in mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, and in the production of tools and equipment where a strong and durable joint is required.
