Flux Cored Wires (FCAW)

Flux cored welding wires, also known as FCAW – Flux Cored Arc Welding, represent a special category of wires with a hollow core. This core is filled with flux, which during burning creates a shielding atmosphere or additionally improves the weld properties. Thanks to this, it is not always necessary to use additional shielding gas, which is a big advantage especially for outdoor work. With solid wires, welding outdoors can be problematic, as air currents can blow away the shielding gas and disrupt arc stability.

✅ Advantages of flux cored wires include high productivity, good penetration even in thicker materials, and the ability to weld in various positions. The weld is strong with good resistance to cracking. Moreover, flux cored wires allow faster deposition rates compared to standard solid wires, which is especially appreciated by professional welders on larger projects.

❌ The disadvantage may be the higher production of fumes and slag, which needs to be removed after welding. Some types also come at a higher cost compared to standard solid steel wires. Nevertheless, flux cored wires are widely used in construction, repair work, and industrial production, where speed and reliability are crucial.

Applications of flux cored wires are very diverse. They are used for welding steel structures, bridges, beams, containers, or thick-walled tanks. They are also applied in heavy equipment repair or in ship and machinery manufacturing, where high weld quality is required. For hobby welders, they are attractive because they allow welding without shielding gas, which saves costs and simplifies work.
